“Don’t bother just to be better than your contemporaries or predecessors. Try to be better than yourself.”
William Faulkner – Nobel Prize-winning American author
I think it took me 32. 5 years to figure out, I was not competing against everyone else, in whatever discipline, I was measuring against my own potential.
Especially in the way life, traditions and culture have changed in the last decade, its not an apples to apples comparison. What has been done in the past was done with a different set of tools, with different levels of expectations. In addition, we’re in a collaboration age, and those that are reaching unprecedented heights are doing so “with” the help of others, in some cases those considered competitors in the past.
The ways of holding your secret sauce tight to the vest (save patented or ground breaking technology), does not serve anymore. Sharing the best your have, with no reservations, will get you back far more than you ever give.
I would like to say in the last couple years I have made great strides and improvements in learning and development, much more on an annual basis than I have in the last decade. I hope I can keep pace…and I plan to continue to share the best of, so I can work smarter and learn from the best of my peers.
